Shaadi.com Stood For Its Right and Won!
We filed a petition in Bombay High Court, against the makers of Runningshaadi.com for cashing in on the goodwill of India’s leading matchmaking portal.
Our users, most of whom, are largely from the traditional Indian diaspora believe in the age-old system of arranged marriage. (Through this film) they are likely to be misled into thinking/believing that Shaadi.com offers the services mentioned/portrayed in the movie i.e. assisting young couples and/or under age couple in eloping/ marrying.
The Bombay High Court ordered the filmmakers to remove all the Shaadi.com references from the movie. Sircar’s Crouching Tiger Motion Pictures and Rising Sun Films filed an undertaking that they would not use the trade mark ‘shaadi.com’ in the title, dialogue or any visual representation of the film, which stars Tapsee Pannu.
This is what our CEO Gourav Rakshit had to say on the issue,“We had two main concerns. One was the infringement of our trademark in the film’s title. We also wanted to make sure that our brand was not being disparaged in the film. Millions of people get married through Shaadi.com and it is not fair to the brand or its consumers.”
